William Larman was born in Enfield, Middlesex, on 17 May 1837, and joined the service as a Boy 1st Class aboard H.M.S. ARCHER in January 1856. He was drafted aboard the CHESAPEAKE in June 1857, and after serving as a Petty Officer 1st and 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. TRIBUNE (1862-66), joined the Coast Guard Service. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in December 1876, receiving promotion to Chief Officer, Coast Guard, two years later, and was pensioned in May 1892, having served 37 years in uniform.
