Philip Birkinshaw was born in Melbourne, Derbyshire on 5 September 1886, the son of a colliery owner. He was educated at Ockbrook School, Derbyshire and in civilian life was the managing Director of a Fuel Works. He attested for General Service on 11 December 1915 and the next day was placed in the Army Reserve. He was mobilized on 29 November 1916 and attested for the Inns of Court Officers Training Corps on 8 January 1917, aged 29 years, 3 months. He was discharged on appointment to a commission in the 1/1st Huntingdonshire Cyclists Battalion (T.F.) on 28 August 1917. Served in France from June 1918. latterly served with 121 P.O.W. Company. Promoted to Lieutenant in March 1919 (London Gazette 7 June 1920). Post-war his home address was ‘Bryn Rhosyn, Blackhill, Glamorgan’. He died in 1972.
