Charles II (1660-1685), Third issue, Sixpence, mm. crown, on a thick flan, 5.67g/11h (ESC 320; N 2767; S 3323). With part of a hallmark (maker’s mark) stamped in front of face, reverse double-struck, otherwise nearly very fine, extremely rare
£3,000-4,000
ESC mentions a specimen on a thicker flan in the British Museum collection and states that it may well be from the fillet for a shilling blank. The weight of this specimen would appear to substantiate that. The die-axis and double-striking, however, suggest that this is not a carefully made pattern or proof but rather a metal trial, independently stamped with a silversmith’s mark
