Douglas Herbert Young was born in Crickslade, Swindon, Wiltshire on 16 November 1902. A Carman by occupation, he enlisted into Green Howards at Whitehall on 11 August 1919. With them he served in India, September 1921-March 1925; Khartoum, March 1925-January 1926; China, January 1927-February 1928; with the B.E.F., January- 9 June 1940; Middle East, April 1941-May 1942. Taken prisoner in North Africa, he was held in Italy and Germany as a Prisoner-of-war, June 1942-April 1945. Returning home he was transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve in January 1946, being discharged on 31 July 1952 as a Warrant Officer 2nd Class (C.S.M.).
