Gay was commissioned a Sub-Lieutenant on 1 September 1946; Lieutenant in February 1949; Lieutenant-Commander in November 1958 and retired on 28 May 1961. With a photocopied photograph of the South Western Hotel, Southampton, taken over by the Royal Navy in August 1940 and given the name H.M.S. Shrapnel.
