Thomas Mitchell was born and lived in Burnley, Lancashire and enlisted at Nelson. Serving in the 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment, he was killed in action on 1 July 1916, aged 17 years, on the first day of the battle of the Somme. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He was the son of Thomas and Clara Mitchell, of 12 Mason Street, Burnley.
