Private Fred Hamilton, 2nd Battalion Manchester Regiment, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 15 August 1914. The battalion served in the 14th Infantry Brigade, 5th Division, in Smith-Dorrien’s II Army Corps. The action at Le Cateau on 25 August 1914 cost the battalion 14 officer and 339 other rank casualties. Hamilton was later transferred to the 1/5th battalion Manchester Regiment which served in Gallipoli and Egypt before returning to France in March 1917. With copied roll extracts and m.i.c. - his clasp was issued in 1938.
