William Melton enlisted on 14 April 1902. As a Private in the 5th Dragoon Guards he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 15 August 1914. Served in the 1st Cavalry Brigade in Allenby’s Cavalry Division. The 5th Dragoon Guards served at Nery, 1 September 1914 and at Messines, 30 October 1914. Later transferred to the Devon Regiment. Discharged 13 June 1918 due to chronic rheumatism and awarded the Silver War Badge (not with lot). With copied m.i.c. and roll extract; clasp confirmed.
