Richard Cranley Onslow was commissioned, from Sandhurst, into H.M.’s 12th Regiment, on 11 September, 1876. He transferred to the Bengal Staff Corps in 1879 and was posted to the 10th Bengal Lancers on 8 July. He served in the second Afghan War and was present in actions with the Ghilzais and at Jagdalak. Served as Adjutant to the Viceroy’s Body Guard 1882-86; Adjutant, 10th Bengal Lancers 1886-88; Squadron Commander 1890; Commandant, Viceroy’s Body Guard 1889-94; Deputy Judge Advocate-General, Bengal Army, 6 January, 1899; Lieut.-Colonel 1902; Colonel 1905; Deputy Judge Advocate-General, Northern Command, 1 June, 1907; transferred to the Unemployed Supernumary List, 26 July, 1914.
