Michael McCarthy was born in January 1827 and enlisted for the 1/60th Royal Rifles at Fermoy, Ireland on 1 January 1845, receiving a bounty of £4.0.0. Posted to India, he served in the Second Sikh War and was present at the siege of Mooltan. Not present at the battle of Goojerat having been invalided back to Kurrachee before the action. Promoted to Corporal in March 1854 and to Sergeant in August 1856. Served in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny, being present at the siege of Delhi. 2436 Private Michael McCarthy was killed in action on 14 September 1857 during the final assault on the city.
