John Thomas was born in Oswestry, Shropshire. He attested for short service with the Imperial Yeomanry at Ruabon on 5 February 1901, aged 26 years. Posted to the 88th Company 9th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry (Welsh Yeomanry), he served in South Africa, April 1901-August 1902, being discharged at Aldershot on 3 September 1902. With copied service papers.
