Josef Czernik was born in Downary, Poland on 15 January 1919. During the war, he served in the 5th Kresowa Division of the Polish 2nd Corps and saw action at Monte Cassino. Czernik was discharged from the Polish Resettlement Corps at Witley on 11 December 1948. He became a U.K. citizen on 28 April 1975.
