Pair: Private John Renshaw, 84th Foot

Military General Service 1793-1814, 2 clasps, Nivelle, Nive (John Ranshaw, 84th Foot); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., large letter reverse which is additionally inscribed ‘27 Yrs’ (John Renshaw, 84th Foot) engraved naming, fitted with steel clip and bar suspension, edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise better than good fine (2) £1000-1200

John Ranshaw/Renshaw was born in Manchester and attested there for the 84th Foot on 3 September 1808, aged 14 years. He was discharged at his own request for pension on 2 September 1835, aged 41. He ‘served with the army in Walcheren in 1809; in the Peninsula under Field Marshal Duke of Wellington in the years 1813 & 1814; New South Wales from the year 1817 to 1819. Present at the battles of the Nive & Nivelle in 1813’. His period of service is given as 23 years 2 months, but adding back his 4 years’ underage service brings the total to 27 years, which figure he chose to record on the reverse of his L.S. & G.C. medal. He afterwards resided at Chowton Green, Manchester, and died on 20 March 1866.
