Alexander Davison’s Medal for The Nile 1798, silver (Mr Bruff Master of the Orion) finely engraved in running script in reverse field, contained in a glazed gold case with integral loop, a superb example, extremely fine £2000-3000
Charles Schuyler Bruff (1750-1823), Master in the Royal Navy, seniority 8 April 1780. Bruff was Master of the Orion 74, Captain James Saumarez, which ship played a distinguished part in the defeat of the French fleet at the battle of the Nile.
His son, also Peter Schuyler, was a noted civil engineer. He also appears to have been the brother of the noted American cutler and silversmith Charles Oliver Bruff.
Recipient is Peter Schuyler Bruff, not Charles
