Michael Shandley was born in Manchester. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Liverpool Regiment (Militia), he attested for the Royal Lancaster Regiment at Manchester on 19 September 1889, aged 18 years. With them he served in India, October 1891-February 1896. Transferred to the Army Reserve in September 1896, he was recalled to the Colours in November 1899. With the 2nd Battalion he served in South Africa, December 1899-July 1902. He was discharged having completed his service on 1 August 1902. With copied service papers and other research.
