Boer War Interest Rare Handwritten Journal by Battery Sergeant A. H. Tuff a Senior NCO of the 37th Battery Royal Field Artillery 1898 - 1902, this excellent journal is written within the covers of ‘Army Book 129’ and commences with the embarkation of the 37th Battery 2nd July 1898 bound for the Sudan Campaign. The activities of the battery are recorded in great detail including their part played in the Battle of Omdurman finishing with the return of the battery to Southampton 6th October, 1899. The second part of the journal is headed ‘South African Campaign 1899 - 1902’ commencing with the embarkation of the battery at Southampton 14 November 1899. The activities of the battery are thereafter described in great detail right through until June 1902 and finishes with the battery’s embarkation September 1902. In addition to the excellent detail there is a good selection of photographs both of Boer Troops and our own, the former including a group photograph entitled ‘Last to Surrender in the O.R.C. June 16th 1902 General C. Nieuwoudt and Staff’. Additionally there are seven group photographs of the 37th Battery taken in a variety of dress and stations with Battery Sergeant Tuff clearly identified, there is an informal picture showing Tuff and a fellow NCO, camels and three Egyptian Guides visiting the Sphinx and Great Pyramid, also an individual photograph of Tuff wearing his medals, and a Certificate entitled ‘Ypres 1914 - 1918’ issued to RSM A.H. Tuff R.F.A. signifying that he is a Member of the Ypres League of Officers and Men who served in the Immortal Defence of Ypres 1914 - 1918, the outer cover of the journal is detached but the contents in good order, the photographs are clear but many of them with frayed edges £350-450
