John Swanston was a part-time rescue worker attached to the Heriot Watt Rescue Station covering the Lothian Coal Mining area. The Mine Rescue Station Competition Medal was sponsored by Siebe, Gorman & Co. Ltd. - the company was responsible for the Siebe Gorman breathing apparatus used by the rescue workers.
