George Cornish was born at Chard, Somerset, and enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1851. Advanced to Corporal in the Crimea, where he was present at Inkermann and in operations before Sebastopol, he was discharged as a Master-Gunner in 1873, after 21 years with the Colours.
