On 5 September 1997, Mr David Dougherty, an employee of Securicor Ltd. was robbed of £160,000, whilst about his duty, at Belfast Zoo. Mr Dougherty was knocked to the ground and a knife was put to his throat. He required treatment for shock after the attack, during which one of the robbers said to the effect, ‘Any funny money, cut his throat’.
Eric Higgins, a former employee of Securicor, and Paul Umberto Meli, were both convicted of this and other crimes in trials held in 1998/99.
