Alfred Croom was born in Newark in 1885. He enlisted at Nottingham on 20 August 1907. With the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters he served in India, February 1908-September 1914. With the 1st Battalion he entered France on 4 November 1914. He was severely wounded at the First Battle of Ypres, 1914. Was entitled to wear a wound stripe. Latterly served with the Labour Corps having also served with the Durham Light Infantry and Royal Munster Fusiliers. Discharged on 13 February 1919.

With original Certificate of Registry of Birth; Second and Third Class Certificates of Education, 1909 & 1910; Swimming Certificate, 1909; Character Certificate; Discharge Certificate; letter addressed to Mrs E. E. Croom of 163 Wollaton Street, Nottingham (some damaged and repaired). Also with copied m.i.c. and service details.
