Henry VI (First reign, 1422-1461), Annulet issue, Penny, York, mm. cross II on obv. only, lis each side of neck, 0.61g/10h (Whitton 2; N 1433; S 1847). Small of flan, good fine, extremely rare £1,200-1,500
Provenance: Found at (Royal) Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, January 2011.
The Annulet coinage of York is an extremely rare issue, the penny particularly so, being absent from most of the comprehensive collections of the last 50 years including Delme-Radcliffe, Buck etc. The Royal mint at York seems to have operated for just a brief period from July to December 1423 and, even during this short time, coins would not have been struck continuously
