Harry Hopper was born in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire. A Clerk by occupation, he attested for the King’s Royal Rifle Corps at Manchester on 23 June 1898. With the 3rd Battalion he served in South Africa, May 1899-July 1902. Returning to England, he was transferred to the Army Reserve in July 1902 and discharged at his own request and a payment of £25 on 28 April 1904.
