James Hayter was born in Chichester. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the 2nd Battalion 5th Foot on 13 December 1805, aged 29 years. With the regiment he served in Portugal, Spain and France. Hayter was discharged on 24 January 1813 as a consequence of chronic rheumatism contracted in Portugal. With copied discharge papers and roll extracts.
