Captain R. D. C. Uniacke was commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, in the Irish Guards on 16 December, 1955; Lieutenant, 16 December, 1957; Captain, 16 December, 1961. In January 1961 Captain Uniacke was seriously injured and broke his back whilst undergoing training on a pre-Para ‘Hardening Course’ for No.1 (Guards) Independent Parachute Company.
