John Rotherham, brother of The Rev. Thomas Rotherham, M.A. of Queen's College, Oxford and first headmaster of Codrington College, appointed in 1743. The College was officially opened on 9 September as a grammar school to teach the basics of education, reading, writing, Latin and accountancy. Whilst the school laid the foundations for education in Barbados, it has been said that it contributed little to the abolition of slavery
