Herbert Henry Hobbs was born in Bristol on 3 January 1872. A Plumber by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard Indus on 21 July 1891. He became a Stoker Petty Officer in November 1906 when on Tamar and Acting Chief Stoker in July 1912 when on Majestic. He attained the rank of Chief Stoker in July 1913 and was pensioned ashore, joining the R.F.R. Devonport on 21 July 1913. He was recalled to the service in August 1914 and served as Chief Stoker on a number of vessels/establishments including Satellite and Wallington. Demobilised on 17 May 1919.
