Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., Anchor obverse (Robert Jelly, Sergeant, Royal Marines, H.M.S. Hazard, 22 Years), fitted with double ring suspension, edge bruising and traces of brooch-mounting to reverse, thus fine £400-500
Robert Jelly was born in Leicester and enlisted in the Royal Marines in February 1825, aged 18 years. Posted to the 14th Company, R.M., he went on to witness extensive active service, including the battle of Navarino aboard H.M.S. Albion, the Syria operations aboard the Bellerophon, and operations off China 1840-42 and New Zealand 1845-46 aboard the Hazard. And on being pensioned ashore as a Sergeant in June 1847, he added the “Anchor” L.S. & G.C. Medal to his accolades, although he does not appear to have claimed his Naval General Service Medal with 2 clasps; sold with copied research.
