Thomas Henry Charleton was born in Jersey on 9 October 1828. He was appointed Ensign in the 69th Regiment, without purchase, on 11 May 1849, becoming Lieutenant in January 1853 and Captain, by purchase, in January 1856. He served in Canada between September 1869 and November 1870, and was Brigade Major of the Field Force in the affair at Trout River on 27 May 1870, serving under Lieutenant-Colonel G. Bagat, 69th Foot.
