John Roberts was born in the Parish of Ruthin, Denbighshire. A Miller by trade, he enlisted into the 23rd Foot at Denbigh on 1 April 1807, aged 25 years. He served with the regiment in the West Indies and thence in Portugal and Spain, being wounded at the siege of Badajoz. He served in the Waterloo Campaign and was discharged in November 1818 as a consequence of ‘Rheumatism and lack of power of the left arm for the last six years following a fever in Portugal’. Roberts was awarded a pension of 6d per diem, subsequently increased to 9d in October 1832. Clasps confirmed.
