Peter Derek Martlew qualified for his Air Gunner’s brevet in June 1940 and was commissioned from Flight Sergeant to Pilot Officer in May 1942. An accompanying M.O.D. letter also states that he served ‘as an Air Gunner at Bridlington in 1943, before taking up administrative duties at R.A.F. Whitley Bay and R.A.F. Locking in 1944-45’. He was released from the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Flight Lieutenant in March 1946.
