George Bryer-Ash entered the war as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Wiltshire Regiment. He was promoted to Lieutenant in September 1915. Transferring to the R.A.F., he was ranked as a Lieutenant (Flying Officer, Observer) in April 1918. He served as an Observer flying with No. 55 Squadron, several times flying with 2nd Lieutenant C. R. Whitelock as pilot. Flying with Whitelock on 16 July 1918, he was injured when his aircraft crashed on take off. Bryer-Ash was invalided to England on 6 August and relinquished his commission on account of ill-health on 9 April 1919. With copied service papers and other research.
