Estimate: £300–£400

Italy, Two Satyrs, c. 1550, a cast bronze medal of the Venetian School, bust left, formed of lion’s head, toad, dolphin, snail, etc, rev. bust left adorned with male genitalia, 40mm (Attwood 416; Pollard, Bargello III, 813). Stain in obverse field, otherwise very fine, rare £300-400

Traditionally the obverse portrait is said to have been of Paolo Giovo, a medal commissioned by Pietro Aretino; however this has now been disproved
