Russia, Order of St. Stanislaus, Case for a 1st Class set of insignia with swords, by P. S. Petrov, Petrograd, 260 x 154 x 60mm., having a cloth covering simulating red leather, lid with gilt eagle and inscription, interior of lid with silk covering bearing the name and address of the case manufacturer, complete with velvet lined internal pad, slight damage to lid and elsewhere, generally good condition £400-500
The City of St. Petersburg was renamed ‘Petrograd’ on 31 August 1914 as it was felt that the original name was too ‘Germanic’. It was renamed ‘Leningrad’ on 26 January 1924 in honour of the revolutionary leader who had died on 21 January. It remained so named until 6 September 1991 when it returned to its original name. The above case, probably for an ‘Eduard’ set of insignia, can therefore be dated to a period 1914-17.
