Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Guadaloupe (J. Peters, Serjt., 2nd Bn. 60th Foot) suspension bar slightly bent, edge bruise, good very fine, rare £1800-2200

Only 2 officers and 8 other ranks of the 2nd 60th Foot received the M.G.S. Medal.

Joseph Peters was born in Germany on 18 March 1790. A Shoemaker by occupation, he attested in No.1 Company 2nd Battalion 60th Foot on 4 November 1809. As a Serjeant he was discharged from the regiment in Barbados on 17 May 1817.

Sold with a number of original documents, including: recipient’s pay book; recipient’s discharge certificate; an associated note dated 13 May 1817 and signed by Lieutenant Adair, 2nd Battalion 60th Rifles; certificate confirming the award of the medal, dated 7 December 1849; Guild of Artisan’s Certificate to ‘Johann Theodor Peters, dated 9 September 1852; a letter (?) dated, 1 January 1857 - all showing signs of age but rare survivals from this time.
