Herbert Smith was born in Rayleigh, near Southend, Essex. A Shoemaker by occupation, he attested for service in the Royal Artillery on 17 November 1890, aged 19 years, 10 months. Several days later he transferred to the 1st Battalion Oxfordshire Light Infantry. With them he served in India, October-November 1891; Burma, November 1891-December 1892, and India, December 1892-January 1901. In India he served with the Chitral Relief Force on attachment to the Telegraph Department and then served in the Mohmand Relief Force. Sold with copied service papers and extracts from rolls which confirm clasps.
