Maurice Evans Booth was born in Highgate, London, in June 1890, and was a butcher by profession before enlisting into the Coldstream Guards on 21 September 1914. He served with the Expeditionary Force overseas from 17 March 1915, and was twice wounded; firstly on 12 April 1918, and again shortly afterwards, on 27 April 1918, when he was gassed.
