Hugh Caulfield Underhill enlisted in September 1914 for the Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant and attached to the 6th Gurkha Rifles in Gallipoli. He was killed in action in an attack on Hill 'Q' on 8 August, 1915, as reported in the Historical Records of the 6th Gurkha Rifles. ‘During the day's fighting Captain J.S. Dallas was dangerously wounded, while 2/Lieutenant H.G. Underhill was reported missing. 2/Lieutenant Underhill was seen several times during that day most gallantly leading his men. There is no doubt now but that he was killed. During his only too brief military career he did splendid work for the Battalion.’
