James Paterson, from Auchtergavan, Scotland, preached his first sermon in Jamaica in December 1835. The Broughton Place church he founded opened in 1842 but Paterson was fatally injured in a fall from his horse that year and the ministry passed in 1844 to Andrew G. Hogg, the encumbent until 1882 (Lyall, pp.67-8)
