James Craig was born in Auchterhouse, Dundee, and living in Dundee, enlisted at Kirkaldy. Serving with the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry, he was wounded at Suvla. Evacuated by sea, he died of his wounds on 2 December 1915. He was buried in the Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta. Craig is mentioned in The Fife and Forfar Yeomanry, 1914-1919 by Major D. D. Ogilvie.
