Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Relief of Mafeking, Orange Free State (10663 Gnr. J. Madge, M Bty. R.H.A.) very fine and scarce £140-160
John Madge was born in Paighton, Devon and enlisted in the Royal Artillery in July 1895. Posted to ‘M’ Battery, Royal Horse Artillery in December 1899, he served out in South Africa from February to December 1900, when he was present at the relief of Mafeking and in other operations in the Orange Free State (his military history and service sheets confirm, although his name does not appear on the published roll of recipients for the “Relief of Mafeking” clasp - so possibly a slightly later claim). Madge was still serving at the time of his death from tuberculosis at Exeter in July 1911.
