Sergeant William Horwood was killed in action at Abu Klea, 17 February 1885, shot through the stomach whilst acting as Sergeant-Major with the 1st Battalion Mounted Infantry.

He had enlisted as a Private into the 19th Hussars on 25 April 1870, being promoted to Corporal in August 1874, to Lance-Sergeant in April 1876, and to Sergeant in November 1877.

He served in Egypt from June 1882 and was promoted to Troop Sergeant-Major with the Mounted Infantry in June 1883. He was the only man from the 19th Hussars to serve with the Mounted Infantry, of which he was promoted to Chief Paymaster at the end of August 1884.
