Robert Francis Dalrymple was born on 21 February 1879, and joined the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, from the Militia, on 25 October 1899, being promoted to Lieutenant in November 1900. He served in South Africa with the Mounted Infantry, at the relief of Ladysmith, including the operations of 17-24 January 1900; operations of 5-7 February 1900; operations at Tugela Heights 14-27 February 1900; action at Pieter’s Hill; operations in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, November 1900; operations in the Transvaal, November 1900 to July 1901; in the Orange River Colony, May 1902; in Cape Colony, July 1901 to March 1902 (Queen’s Medal with 5 clasps, King’s Medal with 2 clasps). He was promoted to Captain in January 1907, and employed with the Egyptian Army from the following November.
