D.C.M. London Gazette 21 October 1918. ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When enemy mining operations were heard in a block in the trench, he volunteered to plow in the tunnel with a bomb composed of Stokes’ shells. This was successfully done by rolling it down a staircase in the trench between his own men and the enemy. The enemy miners were killed. He has proven himself an exceptionally good gun commander, vigilant, and always ready to retaliate. He has done fine work’.
Only 56 D.C.M’s. and three bars to the Royal Irish Regiment - the lowest number to any line regiment.
