James Hannis was born in Oxfordshire in about 1827 and entered the service of Queen Victoria in 1854. First listed in the Imperial calendar as Yeoman State Porter in 1877, he was awarded the Queen’s Faithful Service Medal in 1880 and later a 10 years service bar. Hannis retired in 1895 and died on 12 December 1897, at 63 Landor Road, Stockwell, Surrey. He was buried in Windsor Cemetery.
