Private Martin Bulmer Kay served with the First Western Australia (Mounted Infantry) Contingent, consisting of 5 officers and 125 other ranks, which departed from Albany, Australia, on 7 November 1899. This Contingent served with General Clements’ Column near Colesberg and Orange Free State; with Major-General Hutton’s Column on the advance from Bloemfontein to the occupation of Pretoria; and with Colonel De Lisle’s Column until their departure from South Africa on 13 December 1900. Five officers and 115 other ranks returned to Australia, arriving at Albany on 29th December. The unit was disbanded on 29 March 1901. Clasps confirmed.
