John Malcolm Brodie Sanders entered the Egyptian theatre of war on 25 September 1914 and served Gallipoli, 1 May-26 August 1915, being wounded on 7 August. The war diary entry for that date read:

‘Bde ordered to attack Turk Trenches E.& W. of and between Krithia Nullah ... artillery preparation 9 am. attack 9.40 am. 5th Manc. were ordered to make another attack on H.11a & H11b. We were very badly shelled by our own guns and sustained several casualties from them, probably 30. Artillery preparation and consequently infantry attack again failed. ... No counterattack’.

He rejoined the Egyptian Expeditionary Force on 20 June 1916 and served with them until 31 October 1918. He retired, receiving a gratuity, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 31 August 1920. A Lieutenant-Colonel on the General List of the Reserve of Officers during the Second World War - he was employed in the Royal Engineers, Movement and Control Section later in the war. Sold with copied research including extracts from the war diaries of the 5th Battalion Manchester Regiment.
