Fireman Edward Maurice Kerwin (spelt ‘Kirwin’ on medals) was killed in action, aged 40 years, on 24 December 1917, when the S.S. Canova was sunk by a submarine 15 miles south of Mine Head, Co. Waterford. He was one of seven men killed. The husband of Mary Catherine Kerwin of 28 Clifford Street, Bootle, Lancashire; his name is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.
