Sweden, New Sweden Commemorative Medal 1638-1938, Gustaf V, silver, edge inscribed, ‘Silver, 1938’, with ribbon, in C. F. Carlman, Stockholm case of issue, extremely fine £60-80

‘New Sweden’ was a Swedish/Finnish colony established in 1638 on the North American coast embracing parts of Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania. Land was purchased from the local Indians and a fort built, named Fort Christina, on the site of the present-day Wilmington. Conflict with the Dutch based in nearby New Netherlands (New Jersey) led to the colony being taken over by the Dutch in 1655.
