Hammer Price:

16th Century, Henry VIII, brass Palimpsest or 2oz weight, crowned H stamped within concentric circles, reverse futher concentric circles, 48mm, 55.4 gm (cf. Curtis, SNC May 1988, p. 114; cf. Spink Auction 1, lot 186 for a 1oz weight). Fine and extremely rare

Palimpsests-monumental brasses turned and often re-engraved on their reverse sides, probably had their metallic origin in salvage from English monastic destruction in the late 1530’s and 1540’s, or from Flemish brasses pillaged from churches in the Low Countries.
