John Hanrahan was born in Cork and enlisted in the 6th Dragoon Guards in April 1845, aged 14 years. Appointed a Trumpeter in December 1851, he witnessed active service out in the Crimea in the Sebastopol operations, and afterwards during the Indian Mutiny, gaining advancement to Corporal in June 1860 and to Sergeant in the following month. Hanrahan was finally discharged as a Trumpet-Major in May 1873.
